Back from the Hills, off to the Mountains!

Posted on June 30, 2007. Filed under: Conferences, For Worship Leaders, Resources, Thoughts — Ryan Egan @ 8:40 am

My wife, her parents and I had a wonderful time in South Dakota’s Black Hills this past week.  We we’re amazed by all of the animals we saw (does, bucks, wild turkeys, bison, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and many other types of birds and small critters) and we were so thankful for the work the firefighters did to contain a forest fire started by arson.  It’s sad to know there are people that want to ruin the beauty of God’s creation.  Thanks so much for your labor, firefighters, I appreciate you!

Tomorrow morning I leave for the AFLC’s Free Lutheran Youth (FLY) Conference.  I’m very excited to see how God will move among the youth and adults that will be attending, and very excited to spend some time at Estes Park in the Rockies.  I will *hopefully* be blogging live from the conference so you can stay updated on what’s going on.

In the meantime, check out this free download and leadsheet from Worship Matters.

Free and Living Congregations

Posted on June 22, 2007. Filed under: Resources, Thoughts — Ryan Egan @ 8:28 am

It’s amazing how far things will travel without you even knowing it. I was searching Technorati today to find new blogs and decided to type in “Living Word Free” just for fun, and ran into this post. I never imagined our church logo would travel so far, so quickly!

He wonders what a “free Lutheran church” is. It’s actually quite a common question, so I’ll think I’ll give you the mini-version and point you to a much more detailed explanation.

The concept of the new testament church is one that is amazing and one that we’ve shied away from but are wisely coming back to today. The concept was a group of believers, sharing what they had in common for the common goal of spreading the name of Jesus. Each group was focused on accomplishing this goal, and the teaching of the Scriptures and the apostles was their sole authority. The flow chat of authority looks something like this:

God and His Word (Jesus) > The teaching of the Apostles > The local group of believers.

Sadly, today, church bodies have become large organizations that take authority and twist it. Often times the flow chart of authority now looks like this:

The Church body > God and His Word > The Local Church.
Or, even worse: The Church body > The Local Church > God and His Word.

Sometimes God and His Word are left out completely, which is the absolute worst situation.

The Free Lutheran church believes first of all in the authority of God’s Word above all else, then in the authority of the local congregation. The “Association of Free Lutheran Congregations” is the church body’s entity but not its authority. Each congregation has authority to make individual decisions, based on God’s Word, for their ministries. In this way, the assocation can’t force man-made mandates on congregations, and congregations can’t force man-made mandates on the rest of the association.

One statement from the AFLC web site is this:

Free congregations have no right to demand that other congregations shall submit to their opinion, will, judgment, or decision; therefore, domination by a majority of congregations over a minority is to be rejected.

So, free congregations are free to make their own decisions, always based on Scripture, and are not held to a higher authority of man-made standards. As long as each congregation holds Scripture as the highest authority, this system works very, very well, and I’m very glad to be a part of it. For a much more detailed description, visit here.

Okay, now I will be offline for the next week as we go to the Hills, but I just had to respond to the post I found!

Off to the Hills!

I will be going offline for the next week as my family is heading to the beautiful Black Hills. I’m looking forward to reading on the cabin deck, grilling hot dogs, and seeing buffalo roam.

In the meantime, you should check out a cool blog I’m catching up on called Agile Ministry. They have a great post about networking to find volunteers. It’s great to see a new perspective.

Construction Season is Upon Us!

Posted on June 21, 2007. Filed under: Thoughts — Ryan Egan @ 10:45 am

It’s very interesting how the city is growing. For the longest time, construction only happened in the oldest parts of town (repair) or the newest parts of town (the West side) and never on the East side. Well, since parts of the East side are now going to be the newest parts of town, there is construction everywhere! It’s exciting to see the city growing; love this place!

Other thoughts on my mind today:

  • I am in more in love with my wife than ever, and excited and scared to become a father!
  • I am totally in love with our new church. It’s phenomenal.
  • There’s nothing like a good chai tea to get you through the morning.
  • Heading to the Black Hills on Sunday with my wife and her parents (Mt Rushmore is located there, not North Dakota, readers from outside of SD! Hopefully National Treasure 2 will clear this confusion up when it comes out in December)
  • More growth in our city means more growth in our church (or it should, anyway!) I’m excited to see what will happen.

What a service!

Yesterday’s service was awesome. Here are a few highlights:

  • A pastor who openly wept for his unsaved father before his sermon even got started. We all need this kind of heart for the lost.
  • Pastor’s message to dads to not be a rock, but to stand on The Rock.
  • “In man-land, fear is an unapproved emotion, but anger is approved…Fear usually comes out as anger.” We need a little more healthy fear, and a lot less anger.
  • Pastor’s call to dads about the absolute importance of their faith.
  • Watching a “macho” teen embrace his dad for at least two full minutes after the service was over.
  • Having my grandfather, my dad, and my father-in-law at the service.

The atmosphere of tenderness and excitement and truth was so evident yesterday. God is moving and I can’t wait to see where He is taking us.
