Sunday Recap - A Challenge to Adults
Yesterday at Living Word was a bit different than usual. Our pastor is on a much needed vacation, so I filled in with the teaching yesterday while the other two deacons helped to lead the service. Will, Kelli and Robin did a fantastic job of leading worship, bringing back a few of my favorite hymns that I hadn’t sung for a while. Songs for the morning:
- Praise to the Lord the Almighty (hymn)
- Blessed Assurance (hymn)
- Softly and Tenderly (hymn)
- Jesus, Thank You (Sovereign Grace)
One of the best parts of the day for me was a testimony from Hans, one of our youth who had just been to what’s called FLY BootCamp (Free Lutheran Youth Boot Camp), an intense time of training and encouragement for youth from the Free Lutheran Church around the country. This year they focused on evangelism with some hands on training. I must admit, when it comes to evangelism - especially on the street, everyday, talk to whoever you meet evangelism, I fall way short. Hans challenged all of the adults in the congregation to be examples for the youth, because that’s where the youth get their inspiration and encouragement to keep going. I was sure convicted! What a great challenge for adults for every area of life as well. People are watching, folks.
By the way, Fred McKinnon just started something pretty cool to get people seeing what other churches around the country are singing week to week. This post is part of his ‘Sunday Setlists’ post. Check it out, especially if you’re interested in some new song ideas.
Tomorrow, I want to dive into a hard topic, one that I’ve been wrestling with this past weekend as some interesting things have happened with this blog - pride. I’m going to be honest and raw and hope that some of our thinking might shift a little. See you tomorrow.
Ryan,
Good morning, and thanks for being a part of “Sunday Setlist”! I really appreciate it.
Fred

I really look forward to your post on pride, as I know this is one of the largest stumbling blocks in my life at this time, and I imagine I will have to struggle with it for my entire life. I am praying that attack this challenging topic that people don’t like talking about with God’s word and the Holy Spirit. Thanks so much!

Hans - thanks for stopping by and thanks for the comment! It’s going to be a tough one for me to post on because I’m realizing that I struggle with it big time. Hopefully God can use it to remember that it’s all about Him!!

I love Praise to the Lord. One of my favorites.

Billy,
It definitely is a great hymn, isn’t it? Can’t go wrong with that one - except maybe with the key
It can get slightly high for some people.

Don’t feel as you are falling short of something someone is asking you to do. Maybe God is calling you to have a different influence on “outsiders” not to preach but befriend bearound or just be a positive person for the non-believers.
Not trying to create a discussion on the parts of the evangelical church.
I say ask God see what how he wants you to shine the light on him when the light is shined on your. I mean you don’t really know who reads your blog unless they comment. The non-believers won’t comment. they read, listen, watch, and decide if the God you show and the Jesus you talk about is something for them.
So we shoudl be a role model for the youth and the “yet-to-believe” people out there.
The Songs we sand at North Point Community Church this week was:
1. God is Alive
2. Hands of the Healer
CLOSER:
3. Mighty to Save

“Blessed Assurance” has really affected our church this year. Amazing song.

Gary - thanks for you thoughts! I’m always amazed when I sing Fanny Crosby hymns - how in the world did she do all of those - and while blind??
