Assess, Equip, Let Go

Craig Groeschel just taught a great series which included thoughts about people doing too much and therefore getting burnt out.  He’s also started a series of blog posts on the subject.  I think this concept applies to everyone in church ministry, and it’s something I desperately need to work on.  So, worship leaders/tech directors, are you one who does the following:

  • Won’t allow another worship leader to lead because you’re afraid they won’t do it right?
  • Always micro-managing the video projection or mixer instead of teaching your servants to do it?
  • Not equipping your servants well, and consequently having things fall apart when you happen to be gone?

I have been guilty of all of the above and need to shift my thinking.  There are a lot more, but the truth is, Biblically, we are called to assess what our gifts are and know what we do well; realize we can’t do everything, so therefore equip others to help us; and let go of our pride that says that it will only be successful if we do it.

When we constantly need to do things ourselves, we do two things:  we give ourselves the burden and we make ourselves the focus. We need to let others help lighten our loads so that they, too can be involved, and we need to make Jesus the focus and not ourselves.

How to be an Offering – Encouragement

Many people actually have the spiritual gift of encouragement, and are just natural encouragers.  You feel so motivated around them and just feel a great boost in morale when they talk to you.

But that doesn’t mean that all of us can’t encourage just a little bit.  Paul makes this plea to the church in Thessalonica,

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (I Thess. 5:11)

So many times I get down because I haven’t been encouraged in a day, but I forget that I haven’t encouraged anyone either!  I shouldn’t get depressed when I’m not doing to people what I’d like done to myself!

So I challenge you, make a sacrifice today and take some time to encourage someone.  Take some time to encourage your pastor (especially in this month of pastor appreciation!).  What a great act of worship to our God by taking the time to encourage someone else!

What have you done to encourage someone lately?  How has someone encouraged you?

Empowering

It’s good to be back at Lord of Life again.

Yesterday’s songs:

Because of Your Love
Most High God
O God, Our Help
Enough
Your Name
You are my King
Faithful One

Vicar Josh’s sermon really hit home to me in one way, which I think all of us as worship leaders, tech leaders, web designers, pastors or whatever should take to heart.  He pointed out that when Moses was struggling with the burden of the Israelites, God took the spirit of Moses and put it onto 70 elders of Israel.  God took Moses’ heart, which was fueled by the Holy Spirit, and gave that same Spirit and heart to the elders.

How often do we think that we can do things on our own?  How often do we feel such heavy burdens and never ask for help?  I know I’m guilty.  Also, how often do we expect those under our leadership to see our vision and catch our spirit if we never share it with them?

Let’s ask God to give us the desire, courage, and humility to be able to ask others to share our burdens and to share with others what our spirit is.

How to be an Offering – Leaders

I’ve been a “leader” for quite some time now.  People have looked to me for direction, people have followed me where I tell them to go.

But lately, I’m just starting to learn what it means to be a leader. Notice how I said that people have looked to me for direction and people have followed me where I tell them to go.  I pray that my leadership becomes more and more that people follow me where I urge and plead for them to go, because of compassion, and because I want them to grow, not myself.

Peter handles it so well by saying this,

“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers–not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” (1 Peter 5:1-4)

Not because you must, not greedy for money, and not lording it over those entrusted to you.  But because you are willing, eager to serve, and want to be an example to the flock.

I have definitely fallen short in this area, and to those it has affected, I apologize.  My prayer is that I can begin to offer my leadership as God, through Peter, has instructed.
