Worship leader and blogger Chris Kuti<\/a> wrote a fantastic article yesterday entitled 22 Habits of a Highly Effective Worship Leader<\/a>. \u00a0I’m in full agreement with all of them. \u00a0Here are some highlights:<\/p>\n

1. Hang Out With Your Pastor<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>God is using your Pastor to lead your church somewhere, and picking up on this direction is only going to come by spending time together.\u00a0 So often Worship leaders get their marching orders and hide till Sunday.\u00a0 Don\u2019t.\u00a0 Your effectiveness, in the context God has you in, is in the balance.<\/p>\n

3. Encourage Your Musicians <\/em><\/strong>Call them, get them gifts, have a monthly fun night. Don\u2019t talk about music when you\u2019re spending time together, get to know them and what interests they have besides music.\u00a0 Do whatever it takes to let them know they\u2019re appreciated.<\/p>\n

8. Fast and Pray<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>I always remind myself that \u201cyou can\u2019t worship a God you don\u2019t know.\u201d\u00a0 This needs to be your most guarded habit of the day.<\/p>\n

13. Watch Yourself<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>Record every service and watch yourself back.\u00a0 You are your best critic.\u00a0 Don\u2019t just watch yourself, this is a great time to assess your other players and vocalists.<\/p>\n

20. Memorize<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>You cannot lead people effectively staring at a music stand the entire set.\u00a0 I often use small \u201ccheat sheets\u201d on the ground to help me remember verses to new songs, but I\u2019ve even noticed the negative effect they have on my confidence.<\/p>\n

21. Lead Another Leader to Lead<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>Your effectiveness is not measured by how much the music ministry needs you.\u00a0 Rather, how are you equipping younger worship leaders to do what you do better than you?\u00a0 Your goal should be to go on vacation and not have to book a guest worship leader if you don\u2019t want to.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’m in full agreement with his whole list with one addition: \u00a0I would change number 15 to “Read and Study.<\/strong>” \u00a0It is so important to read. \u00a0Read all you can. \u00a0Read the Bible especially, and read books on philosophy, theology, leadership, and more. \u00a0But don’t just stop at reading the Bible. \u00a0Study it. \u00a0Memorize it. \u00a0Meditate on it. \u00a0By doing so God’s Word will naturally pour out of you as often as you lead worship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
