{"id":196,"date":"2008-04-17T06:30:48","date_gmt":"2008-04-17T12:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamanoffering.com\/blog\/?p=196"},"modified":"2008-06-11T08:26:33","modified_gmt":"2008-06-11T14:26:33","slug":"back-to-basics-drums-percussion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamanoffering.com\/blog\/back-to-basics-drums-percussion\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to Basics: Drums &#038; Percussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>PLAY IN TIME.\u00a0  Period.<\/strong> The sign of a good drummer is not how many fills he can play in time, it is the fact that he can play in time.\u00a0  Buy a metronome that you can hear over your playing and practice with it every time you play.\u00a0  Be able to be as steady as a metronome.\u00a0  Use your metronome during practice and worship services as well.<\/li>\n<li>Learn to control your volume, especially if you use an acoustic kit.\u00a0  If you have a hard time controlling your volume, ask if the church will buy you a <a title=\"Clearsonic | Drum Panels\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clearsonic.com\/csp.htm\">drum shield<\/a>, or buy yourself some <a title=\"Vic Firth | Brushes &amp; Rutes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vicfirth.com\/products\/brushes.html\">brushes or hotrods (rute\/tala).<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Vary your fills and play them skillfully.\u00a0  It&#8217;s very difficult for a band to get back on track if a drummer&#8217;s fill ends a beat too late or half a beat too early.\u00a0  Be able to nail your fills every time.\u00a0  If you can&#8217;t, simplify your fills until you can.<\/li>\n<li>Learn different patterns.\u00a0  Four on the floor doesn&#8217;t work with every song.\u00a0  The country &#8220;train&#8221; beat won&#8217;t work with every song.\u00a0  <strong>Hint:<\/strong> A waltz beat won&#8217;t necessarily work with a driving 6\/8 song as much as you might think 6\/8 is the same as 3\/4.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practice.\u00a0  Practice.\u00a0  Practice.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do any of you have any back to basics tips for percussion (bongos, congas, shakers, djembe, etc?)?\u00a0  While I do play percussion I haven&#8217;t had much experience with it in corporate worship settings and I&#8217;d love to hear your thoughts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 5px 5px 0;float:left;height:50px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/iamanoffering.com\/blog\/back-to-basics-drums-percussion\/\" send=\"false\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"595\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLAY IN TIME.\u00a0 Period.
