{"id":429,"date":"2010-07-27T04:51:26","date_gmt":"2010-07-27T10:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamanoffering.com\/blog\/?p=429"},"modified":"2011-03-10T20:52:15","modified_gmt":"2011-03-11T02:52:15","slug":"5-leadership-lessons-learned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamanoffering.com\/blog\/5-leadership-lessons-learned\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Leadership Lessons I&#8217;ve Learned (or&#8230;am learning, rather)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lately I&#8217;ve been thinking a lot about leadership. \u00a0And lack of it. \u00a0Both in my own life and in other places I&#8217;m affected. \u00a0Here are 5 lessons that I&#8217;ve learned and am trying (or will be trying) to apply.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Give direction. \u00a0People under your authority need to know what to do next. \u00a0They need a goal to reach. \u00a0Give both to them.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage. \u00a0It&#8217;s tempting to always want to fix things, look at the big picture and wonder why it&#8217;s not happening yet. \u00a0Instead, give encouragement for little things you see happening along the way.<\/li>\n<li>Follow through. \u00a0This one is a constant struggle for me but one I desperately need to discipline. \u00a0Do what you say you&#8217;re going to do. \u00a0Period.<\/li>\n<li>Respect others&#8217; time. \u00a0Do not waste other people&#8217;s time because of scheduling decisions or &#8220;things that came up last minute.&#8221; \u00a0If you have to cancel something, give a good explanation as to why.<\/li>\n<li>Care. \u00a0Ask people how they&#8217;re doing. \u00a0Listen, really listen, to people. \u00a0Don&#8217;t just listen because it&#8217;s what you have to do. \u00a0Listen with empathy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What are some lessons you&#8217;ve learned that you can add?<\/p>\n<p>(not sure why this particular wordpress theme shows ordered lists as A, B, C, etc. instead of 1, 2, 3. \u00a0I&#8217;ll have to look into that)<\/p>\n<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 5px 5px 0;float:left;height:50px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/iamanoffering.com\/blog\/5-leadership-lessons-learned\/\" send=\"false\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"595\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lately I&#8217;ve been thinking a lot about leadership. \u00a0And lack of it. \u00a0Both in my own life and in other places I&#8217;m affected. \u00a0Here are 5 lessons that I&#8217;ve learned and am trying (or will be trying) to apply.
