As my friend put it recently – “You coming up for air?   You’ve been pretty silent lately.”

Yep.

Over the past few months my wife and I began conversation about the potential of me looking for another job.  She’s been working full time and providing for our family, which has been amazing and for which I haven’t been grateful enough – but it’s time for that to change.  With the addition of our daughter, her mommy desires have definitely kicked in and she would love to spend more time with our little one – which I think is awesome.

So, I’ve been on a job search for the past month or so.  I have been working part time for some time, and finally looking for full time work.  I would love to be a full time worship and music director someday, but the truth is, many churches find it hard to swing that as a fulltime job.  So I will be joining Billy Chia as a bivocational worship leader.

So, in the midst of my job search, this blog went pretty silent as I had begun building a portfolio site to display my graphic design work in order to get a job.

I have one offer and I’m waiting on another offer right now that I think would be a better fit for me.  I still want to continue to be involved in worship leading and in writing this blog and participating in The Worship Community – but life is crazy and I’m still trying to figure out some schedule issues.

In the meantime – I would appreciate prayer, you can check out my portfolio site and I’m hoping to get back to blogging on worship and music regularly very soon.

Thanks for the listen – enjoy the rest of the week!

Yesterday was a bittersweet day at Living Word.  We had a packed service and people we’re singing out, which was great, but the service was mixed with some very hard news.

Our Pastor and his wife our going through an incredibly difficult situation right now and I would love so much for you to lift them up in prayer.

Our service looked like this:

We were blessed with a sermon from our sister church‘s intern pastor – reminding us as we continue through the book of Romans to look at our own sin before juding others.

This will be a busy week here – and I will be back in full force (finally!).  Here’s the schedule for the week:

  • Tomorrow: Some general news and announcements.  Lots of things happening in my life.
  • Wednesday: Blog Action Day 2008 – we’ll be discussing poverty from a Christian perspective.
  • Thursday: Updates on our process of building worship teams at Living Word.
  • Friday: Not sure yet – leave a comment if you’d like to hear about or discuss anything specific.

I miss blogging and being involved in the worship community – so, here we go again!

Just wanted to give some simple updates:

  • Thanks so much to those of you who commented/tweeted about missing me blogging – much appreciated!
  • I will be blogging regularly again soon.
  • Life is in a bit of a transition right now and I’m trying to figure out how to manage some things wisely.
  • Ministry at Living Word is happening big time, and I’m excited to see where some recent conversations and plans will bring us.

More to come…next week…

Recently I heard the story of a lady who worked as a volunteer in a church.  She had the keys to the kitchen.  She was the “kitchen master” you might say.  She would offer to prepare food for many church events and the kitchen was hers.

It came time for God to take her home.  As the people were gathered for the funeral, they went downstairs to enjoy refreshments and people wondered where all of the refreshements were.  After several minutes of wondering, someone finally said, “Well, this lady had the keys to the kitchen and she always provided the food.”  The people gathered realized they would need to prepare their own food.  There was only one problem.

The kitchen was locked.

My Own Journey

I used to think I understood music and worship ministry.  What I’m coming to realize more and more is that I understand music and worship technicalities. I can usually tell if a song’s going to work for our congregation, I can lead a rehearsal, I can teach someone how to vamp – blah, blah, blah.  But what I’m realizing that I absolutely need to understand is music and worship ministry.  As in – time, and a lot of it.  Time to invest in people and develop and disciple new leaders.  Time to invest in eternally significant things, not just picking a song that will be a hit for a while and we might forget in a year.

Do You Build Worship Teams, or Worship Ministry Teams?

We’re all familiar with worship teams – in fact, we probably implement them every week.  They look like this:

  • Worship Leader (someone who might sing and play and instrument such as guitar or piano)
  • Guitar player
  • Keyboard player
  • Bass player
  • Drummer / percussionist
  • Singers

The worship leader leads these teams, leads the congregation in worship, leads rehearsals, teaches these teams how to play together, etc.  But what happens if the worship leader dies “with the keys to the kitchen” so to speak?  The team is now left on there on trying to figure out how to lead the team, the congregation, rehearsals and more.  What we need are worship ministry teams that look like this:

  • Someone in a leadership role who is mentoring people in music and worship ministry
  • Multiple worship leaders who lead the congregation, teams and rehearsals.
  • Creative teams to help plan worship services and pick music.
  • People who are passionate about connecting people into music and worship ministry.
  • People who enjoy administration and can schedule teams, input important records, etc.

Now what happens?  No one person carries the keys.  The team is thriving and continues to thrive if someone moves on.

My Mistakes – My Goal

I am guilty as charged of falling into the trap of being the “keymaster.”  Are you?  What can we do to make worship ministry teams and not just worship teams?  Would you join me in taking the time to invest in the servants in your church to build a thriving ministry, not just a group of people who rehearses and leads music during services?

Yesterday at Living Word can be summed up with one word, I think: energy.  Not in the new-age sense of the word, but just a general excitement around the place.  Sunday school kicked off yesterday, and consequently, our normal numbers of people attending picked up.  It was so much fun to hear lots of people singing again!   Some dear saints led us in worship by doing a medley of choruses and ending with a song I hadn’t ever heard before, but really enjoyed:

  • How Majestic is Your Name
  • Great and Mighty (our daughter starting bouncing and clapping during this song, she’s starting early!)
  • Almighty
  • Antiphonal praise (a great echo song I had never heard before) – Wilson mentioned that the word “alleluia” means “praise the Lord” in virtually every language, so when you say (or sing) it, you know how to say “praise the Lord” in almost every language – fun stuff!

After the service we had a fairly busy, but relaxing day due to the fact that I was involved in a retreat and some teaching sessions all weekend (more in that the rest of the week) and my wife played for a wedding on Saturday, causing us to not get much housework done on Saturday in order to rest Sunday.  However, we still enjoyed the day thoroughly, with lots of time spent with family.

And the icing on the cake: the Bears won 🙂  And Matt Forte glorfies Jesus more than himself after playing a record-breaking game as a rookie running back.  I have a feeling this is going to be an enjoyable season.
