This morning I was able to spend a significant amount of time in God’s Word due to being up quite a bit earlier than usual and not being able to get back to sleep. God used my lack of sleep as a blessing!
Sometimes, something from God’s Word just strikes you and doesn’t go away (actually, that happens often). This morning, out of several different books and chapters in both testaments, God struck me with this:
Great are the works of the Lord; they are studied by all who delight in them.” Psalm 111:2
Delighting in the Works of the Lord Leads to Study
When we think about the works of the Lord, what do we do? Do we say, “Gee, thanks for that, Lord. That’s pretty cool,” and then just move on? Often that’s what I do. What I should be saying is, “Lord, Your wonders are amazing and great – they point me to You! Help me now to study about You, the Author and Creator of these wonders!”
For many of us the word ‘study’ has negative connotations. I’ll admit it, I didn’t like school all that much. I hated studying. I was a lazy student. Of course hindsight is 20/20 and now I wish I would have studied and learned more. But for the Christian and especially for the worship leader, study should be a word that frequently comes up in our conversations. If we are seeking to lead people to see how great our God is how can we do it if we have not studied and are not continually studying His greatness?
Study Leads to Delighting in the Works of the Lord
The most beautiful part about this verse is that it is a helpful and wonderful cycle. Delighting in the works of the Lord and letting that delight lead us to study more about Him only ends up bringing us back to delighting in Him even more!
Worship leaders, as you prepare for this coming Sunday, make time for studying the works of the Lord and who He is equally as important as memorizing your music. Then when you “give thanks to the Lord with all [your] heart in the company of the upright and in the assembly” (Psalm 111:1) they will see your delight in Him on your face and can’t help but delight in Him as well!
